The Rev. Doug Neel, president of Curtains Up Pagosa! executive board, became rector of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in September 2008 and has made service to the church and to the community a priority ever since. Doug is a member of the Noon Rotary Club, serves on the board of Archuleta County Victim’s Assistance, and is a member of Pagosa Outreach Connection. His leadership at St. Patrick’s has upheld the church’s long tradition of community outreach.
Doug received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Arkansas and he graduated from Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary in Wisconsin cum laude with a Master of Theology degree. He was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1984. He is co-author of “The Food and Feasts of Jesus,” a book on first century foods and feasts that includes recipes based on extensive research.
His support of Curtains Up Pagosa! has been extensive over the years. His son, Robert, has played leading roles in numerous CUP productions and his wife, Sally, has served as actor, music director, vocal coach, and pianist. Doug has demonstrated his acting and singing skills in “South Pacific,” “Androcles and the Lion,” “Godspell,” “ Marat/Sade” and in two CUP productions, “Annie” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
Doug and Sally have one son, Robert, a CUP scholar who recently graduated from Santa Fe University of Art and Design. He also has a daughter, Katherine, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and a son, Charles, of Plano, Texas, from a previous marriage.
Doug is a bit of a renaissance man with a wide range of hobbies and passions. He is an avid fly fisherman and is at home fishing for trout in the quality rivers and lakes surrounding Pagosa and beyond. When he is not relaxing at the river, he enjoys spending time in the kitchen creating and cooking new recipes. He loves doing research and is planning his next book on the journeys of the Apostle Paul. In his spare time he has taken up learning Spanish with hopes of taking an immersion course in Mexico in the future.
